Despite being the only medium that caters to the people in general not only to enlighten them, but also to create future leaders, education has never been an amusement to everyone. One of its many endeavors has been to face the clichés of the society that has always been stagnant in nature and show the people a better direction for the times to come. Among the various initiatives undertaken by The Daily Star, Champs21.com is one, which has already established itself as the pioneer of online education in Bangladesh.

A Long Way to Freedom

The people of Bangladesh discovered their identity through the Language Movement in 1952. The struggle to establish their identity and national spirit began soon after 1947, when the British left India dividing it into two countries: India and Pakistan. Bangladesh, then East Pakistan, was part of Pakistan, which was put together by combining two geographically, culturally, and linguistically separate groups of people. The people of Bangladesh soon realized that being a part of Pakistan, which was created on the two nation theory, there was little scope for the distance culture of Bangladeshis to flourish. The Bangla language was the most important vehicle of the cultural expression for the people of this land. The refusal of the central government in West Pakistan to grant official status to the Bangla became the focal point of struggle.

The contradiction of the two Pakistans , the racial oppression and the exploitation of the West over the East was gradually unveiled. The struggle for the consciousness of identity and cultural freedom which began with the advent of the student movements of the 60's gained momentum in the mass movement of non-cooperation in 1969. Though it brought about the fall of a mighty military ruler like Ayub Khan, the ultimate goal of self-rule was not achieved. After this, came the election of 1970 with absolute victory of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

In the elections of December 7, 1970 the Awami League won 160 out of 162 seats in East Pakistan, all but two, and would have had a clear majority in the new assembly had it been convened. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became the majority party leader of the Pakistan National Assembly .

The military rulers of Pakistan refused to allow the Awami League to form a government. A heinous conspiracy was plotted by the then Pakistani military dictator Yahya Khan along with Zulfikar Ali bhutto. Even though a conspiracy was being planned, General Yahya Khan was careful not to let this be known. On the 13th of February he announced that on the 3rd of March there would be a session of National A ssembly in Dhaka. Everyone began to eagerly await that day. Major General Ziaur Rahman on behalf of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, announced the declaration of independence from Kalurghat Radio Station. A full scale movement of non-cooperation with the military government began on the 26th of March, 1971 which is celebrated as the Independence Day every year. Thus Bangladesh plunged into a gory war seeking its own birth.

The Pakistan Army began their genocide by attacking the innocent Bangladeshis of Dhaka city. The dwellers of Dhaka city never confronted such unimaginable cruelty. The Pakistani army systematically massacred 35,000 Bengali intellectuals and unleashed a brutal war against the Bangalees of East Pakistan to prevent their aspire of independence. But the brave people of this beloved land did not let the dream encircled flag of red and green fall down to dust.

During the nine month struggle which ensued an estimated three million Bengalees died and and ten million refuges fled into India. Sheikh Mujib was imprisoned in west Pakistan. A Bangladesh Government in exile was established. The Bangalees started a smart and courageous guerrilla warfare. At one point, India also got involved in the war. The actual military campaign of India took place in December and lasted only ten days. The Indian Army launched a massive offensive against the Pakistani forces to support the Bangladesh movement. On December 16, 1971, the Pakistan army surrendered.

Edexcel Board / REGISTRATION PROCESS OF Edexcel IGCSE & A' LEVEL EXAMS in DIS

1. Students have to choose their major subjects for IGCSE (O' Level) and A’ level based on their interest of studying field at the Bachelors level (University) in beginning of Grade 8 in DIS.

2. There are three categories of sections in Grade 8. They are as follows in additional to the compulsory subjects:

**Pure Science -
1. Physics
2. Chemistry
3. Biology
4. Human Biology
5. Computing Studies
6. Pure Mathematics

**Pure Commerce -
1. Business Studies
2. Commerce
3. Accounting
4. Economics
5. Computing Studies
6. Pure Mathematics

**Mixed Section -
combination of Science and Commerce subjects

3. Compulsory subjects are English Language, Bangla and Mathematics B.

4. Students have to take minimum seven subjects. Three subjects are compulsory and the rest of the subjects are optional.

5. Students must sit for Monthly, Half Yearly and Final Exams of Grade 8 without any interruption. Students must pass the Final Examination of grades 7, 8 & 9 to be eligible to fill up registration form for the IGCSE (O’ Level) Examination from school.

6. Students can sit IGCSE (O' Level) in one sitting or in multiple sittings. Edexcel does not have any requirement that force students to take all the subjects in one sitting. The students who have decided to complete their IGCSE (O' Level) in two or more sittings should complete their Edexcel examination and then seek admission in A' Level.

7. Students are entitled to drop and add any optional subject after completing one-month (30 days) class. No subjects can be dropped in between Monthly and Half-Yearly Examinations. After Half Yearly Examination students can drop optional subjects within 30 days. The compulsory subjects may not be dropped.

8. For dropping a subject an application must be given to the Academic Coordinator for getting approval from the Vice- Principal and Principal. If it is approved by any of the above person, then the student officially can drop or add the subject.

9. Registration for May-June Examination under Edexcel usually starts during the month of February and for January Examination, registration starts in the month of October. Dates might vary session to session.

10. O’ Level Examination process is commenced on-line. It can be conducted from school or from home (computer, internet and printer will be needed in this regard). Students need to fill up information and make bank draft as asked.While filling the form under institution, students should choose DIS; otherwise they will not be recognized as students of DIS by British Council. Once the online form is filled, a printout hardcopy of the form will has to be submitted with bank draft to the prescribed school address, House # 71, Road # 9/A, Dhanmondi R/A, Dhaka – 1209 or House # 03, Sonargaon Janapath, Sector # 12, Uttara Model Town, Dhaka - 1230.

11. To conduct through school (DIS), student needs to submit Statement of entry (if any), photocopy of first five pages of student's passport, 4 copies of passport sized photos, bank deposit slips and the asked registration fees to the school Admission office.

12. Upon verification of the student's identity and fees clearance, the school authority will process the form and submit it to British Council. The statement of entry for the examination has to be collected from the school at House # 71, Road # 9/A, Dhanmondi R/A, Dhaka – 1209 or House # 03, Sonargaon Janapath, Sector # 12, Uttara Model Town, Dhaka - 1230.

More than 1 million of taka was found in a beggar’s house, in Dhaka, two months ago.

The beggar had two sons, but the sons kept no relation with her, as they thought their mother were poor, and lived separately.
When the beggar died the sons did not come to carry her dead body. So the cops had to carry it. When the cops came, they were also investigating the house. They found 80,000 Tk in notes, 20,000 in coins, 20 – 25 cotton saris,6 Kg of sugar and 20 Kg rice. These all were from Zakat she collected time to time in the month of Ramadan. The neighbors informed that the beggar used to eat in people’s house.
In the meanwhile, the sons came to know that their mother had so much money, they became greedy and they came to claim their rights on it. The cops asked them where they were when their mother died. They lied that they had gone out for work. But the neighbors of the beggar told the truth that they did not keep their relationship with their mother, they also informed the cops that the beggar used to say,” When I die, everything of my own should be donated to the orphanage.“ After listening to it the cops decided to donate all the things to an orphanage.
